Review:

Microcabin sure knows how to make role playing game look great! They just need come up with a feasible story that is represented within the game a little better than Guardian War. Lucienne's Quest does a better job of it but you'll soon be taking leave to all kinds of castles and dungeons just because some stranger asked you to with little information or background on why. At times it can get kind of pointless, though the game is a true wonder to behold and it's unique features almost totally make up for the story's shortcomings.

The game is viewed from an isometric viewpoint (a three-quarters overhead view) and the battles are represented on "floating squares" while the world map is the standard Final Fantasy 7 style 3D. All of the various cities, towns, greenlands, mountains, and other locales look nicely detailed and are all colorful. Battles showcase some nice hand drawn magic effects that are also nice to look at.

The other truly unique characteristic of this game is it's real-time clock. What this means is that time passes in the game as it does in real life. Minute for minute, hour for hour, Lucienne's Quest keeps up with real life with the sun rising and setting. This isn't just a novelty effect either as some characters and enemies (and some situations) only show up in the nighttime hours. For instance, one of your party members transforms into a formidable werewolf at the onset of dusk.

The only problems that the game has is slight pop up and slowdown problem at various occasions. The seemingly air-headed attitude that was given to Lucienne is also a bit unneeded as she oftentimes will tell people she's forgotten what she was supposed to do. Other than the few graphical problems and Lucienne's demeanor, Lucienne's Quest is a great RPG for the 3DO. There are so few RPG's on the system that having two great titles like Guardian War and now Lucienne's Quest (however devoid of storyline they may be) is a welcome addition to any 3DO owner's library.
